Absolutely no apologies for being Chelsea-critical this week. Not long after Roberto Di Matteo’s disgraceful dismissal, it was reported that their players “were united in their support” for him. Two wins in eight matches? Surrender against Juventus in Turin? Great support, guys.

A sacking too far

Rafael Benitez is appointed to replace Di Matteo, to essentially baby sit while Roman Abramovich courts Pep Guardiola like a love-sick pup. “Rafa Out” banners have already been held aloft by stunned Chelsea fans. Roman has perhaps triggered a sacking too far. Lose the punters, your reputation is toast.

Ref tarnished forever

Referee Mark Clattenburg is not guilty. But without a stain on his character? Rubbish. He will not referee a Chelsea game for years, perhaps ever again. Which will deny him many high-profile match appointments. And the club have no shame, no regrets. I rest my case. Pitiful …
