Argentina pay for missed chances

Fan Zone: Argentina FA coach Rodolfo Zapata provides us with his views on their loss to Germany in the World Cup final.

Did the game go as you expected?

It was quite equal. Argentina played a great game but Germany deserved to win.

We had a lot of chances and should have scored at least one of them. In football, if you don’t score then the opposition will.

What were the key moments?

Mario Gotze’s score. That was a fantastic first touch and superb technique.

He didn’t even look where the keeper was. He just knew where he was going.

Argentina had big opportunities. But Higuain, Messi, Aguero and Palacio missed them.

Gotze did a beautiful move to provide a brilliant finish that deserved to win a World Cup final.

Overall impression of the tournament?

Brazil 2014 slowed down a little bit after the group stage, with a few goalless draws. But even the extra-time periods were brilliant.

There has always been something significant to talk about in each of the games.

Several disappointments and a lot of teams broke the form guide.

Germany is always among the major candidates, so this is nothing new.

Argentina did not play beautiful football but this team was effective and they were worthy finalists.

The failures of this World Cup, without doubt, were Brazil, Italy, Spain and England.

Particularly, I also expected more from African teams.

All of them looked easy to predict. They were old fashioned tactically and boring teams.

They need to revamp their squads and renew their ideas or improve on chosen projects or programmes.

Also, players like Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney failed to live up to their pre-tournament hype, like in South Africa 2010.

Costa Rica and Algeria were the great revelations of the tournament.

Personal highlight?

As an Argentinian, it is hard to say that we have got the right winners.

But Germany are absolutely worthy of winning the World Cup. They were the best team throughout and they grew a lot.

They were always very solid, got through the games and improved as the tournament went on.

The German FA programme didn’t start last year. It’s something that has been in the making for the last ten years.

These players have played together at international youth level and under-21 level. Now they’re world champions!

Continuity and consistency are particularly important to create a winning team.
